The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Book Review by: Lauren Lindley, Pellissippi Ambassador for Library Success

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is a powerful and emotional coming-of-age novel that resonates with many readers. The story is told through the letters of Charlie, a shy, introspective high school freshman, as he navigates the ups and downs of adolescence. It’s raw and honest, capturing the confusion, pain, and joy of growing up.

The book dives into deep topics like mental health, trauma, friendship, love, and the struggle to find one's identity, all while reflecting the bittersweet nature of adolescence. The format of the book—Charlie’s personal letters—makes it feel like you're reading someone’s diary, which adds an intimate and emotional touch to the reading experience. His voice is incredibly authentic and makes it easy to relate to his experiences, even if they’re not exactly your own.

One of the strengths of the book is its realistic portrayal of the characters around Charlie. The friendships he forms with Patrick and Sam are heartwarming and significant, offering him a sense of belonging and support. But the book doesn't shy away from showing the darker sides of life, including Charlie’s past and the trauma that he’s dealing with. The balance of joy and heartbreak is what makes The Perks of Being a Wallflower stand out and leave a lasting impression.

Some readers find the book a bit heavy or even sad, but it has themes that are important and thought-provoking. This makes it a worthwhile read, especially for those who appreciate stories that dig deep into emotional experiences and personal growth.

what it looks like from the dance floor.

This haunting novel about the dilemma of passivity vs. passion marks the stunning debut of a provocative new voice in contemporary fiction: The Perks of Being A WALLFLOWER

This is the story of what it's like to grow up in high school. More intimate than a diary, Charlie's letters are singular and unique, hilarious and devastating. We may not know where he lives. We may not know to whom he is writing. All we know is the world he shares. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it puts him on a strange course through uncharted territory. The world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends. The world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that the perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite.
