Q: What should students and I discuss at our first meeting?

A: When you meet students for the first time, here are some topics you can discuss:

  • the roles of academic advisors and success coaches on their Student Success Team.
  • students' plans after graduation.
  • the next meeting.

Q: What kinds of co-curricular activities can I discuss with students?

A. As a mentor you might...

  • encourage a student to get hands on experience in their chosen field.
  • help a student find an internship.
  • connect a student with someone working in their industry.
  • talk with a student about being an officer in student government or a club
  • explore study abroad with a student
  • connect a transfer student with alumni or someone at their prospective institution
  • explore the value of acquiring one or more credentials

Q: What do I do if a student changes or declares a major?

A: First, record this activity in Navigate so that we can collect is. Then, tell Angel Hughes (arhughes@pstcc.edu) and Mary Ellen Spencer (mespencer@pstcc.edu) so that a new career mentor can be assigned.
