ENGL 2160: Mythology

Welcome! ENGL 2160: Mythology

Essay Options

For this assignment, you have the choice of either writing an objective analysis assignment or a subjective analysis.

Objective Analysis

An objective analysis is a type of essay where you examine a topic, idea, or text in a fair or neutral way--without letting your personal opinions or emotions influence your writing. The goal is:

  • break down the subject
  • look at the facts, structure, arguments, or themes,
  • and explain them clearly and logically.

Subjective Analysis

The subjective analysis is asking you to consider your personal experiences and consider how they align with mythical archetypes. The subjective analysis asks you to consider how mythological figures and stories impact the career field you want to enter and how specific mythical archetypes/stories are playing out in the world.

Types of Sources

For this assignment, you are tasked with working with primary and secondary sources. What's the difference?

Primary Sources

A primary source is original material from a time period or event that does not contain any interpretation or analysis by later authors. Common primary source materials include speeches, letters, diaries, or images, but can also include social commentary such as newspaper or magazine articles from the time period of the original event.

Secondary Sources

A secondary source is analytical and interpretive. It may offer a new reading of historical events and primary sources that have been analyzed before, or present an analysis of events and sources that were previously unknown or not written about. A secondary source might also synthesize the work of other historians in order to formulate a totally new interpretation.
