A Huey P. Newton Story is an intimate portrait of Huey P. Newton, the late co-founder of the Black Panther Party. Director Spike Lee and Roger Guenveur Smith collaborate to bring Newton's thoughts, philosophies, history and flavour to life. Adapted from Robert [sic] Guenveur Smith's Obie Award winning off- Broadway solo performance of the same name, Spike Lee brings the play from the stage to the screen as only he could. Shot before a live audience, using a mixture of film and archival footage, he seeks to capture Newton's "inner mind." This film is a piece of history that will bring the meaning to "Without Struggle There is No Life."

A documentary account of the efforts of the Black Panther Party to free Huey P. Newton from prison where he was being held for killing a police officer. It includes a rally held by the Black Panthers on Newton's birthday, February 17, 1968, in which several people, including Stokely Carmichael and Bobby Seale, discuss the revolutionary aims of the Black Panther Party. Also features The Newsreel: An alternative clip providing a chilling look at California's racial environment in 1968, including demonstration scenes outside the Alameda County Jail. Features a rare in-jail interview with Huey P. Newton, with Eldridge Cleaver and Bobby Seale also offering their perspectives on the Panthers, the 10 Point Program, and police brutality.

Renewed attention to this missing chapter in the history of American music led to the publishing of Brian Wright-McLeod's The Encyclopedia of Native Music, an exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, and eventually this documentary.
