Practicum at Pellissippi State: The Practicum Experience

Information about a UTK SIS practicum experience at Community College

The Practicum

  • Approved by UTK SIS
  • 150 hours
  • flexible scheduling
  • practicums in reference normally works out best during the fall or spring semester because of PSCC's limited summer enrollment, but there are exceptions.
  • With our input the students draw up a list of practicum objectives subject to approval by UTK SIS advisor.
  • Typical areas of concentration:  reference, user instruction, collection development, implementing new technology, and cataloging. Feel free to suggest other areas of concentration!
  • All students will be required to spend some hours a week in reference services.
  • Students spend a day at one of the PSCC campus ERC sites and learn about day-to-operations there.
  • We try to involve each practicum student in a special project above and beyond standard library activities.
  • We evaluate students twice--midterm and again at the practicum's end.  Evaluations go to the UTK SIS student advisor with input provided for the student.

Success Stories

We encouraged our former practicum students to use the practicum as a springboard to professional positions, and many of them have found positions in the "real world."  Read some testimonials below.
